THEY LEFT THEIR HEARTS IN SAN FRANCISCO'S CAFES

SAN FRANCISCO - May 2002 - The secret pulse of San Francisco's legendary lifestyle can be found in its ubiquitous cafes, says TCB-Cafe Publishing, whose upcoming book is centered on this topic. The book, "THE CAFES OF SAN FRANCISCO: A Guide to the Sights, Sounds & Tastes of America's Original Cafe Society," was written and designed to highlight this unique and critical element in the makeup of San Francisco's culture. Says TCB-Cafe Publishing director, Stephanie Green, "Everyone tends to associate cafes with Paris or Rome, but residents of those cities always talk about how very European San Francisco is, in particular because of its cafes. The truth is that San Francisco's cafes are some of the oldest and most established in the country, and the cafe culture is so ingrained that without them San Francisco would no longer be unique."

San Francisco cafes are also a big tourist attraction, and many in neighborhoods like Italian-influenced North Beach are major stops for tour groups. Says Green, "Where do you think San Franciscans think up all of those new philosophies and technologies?"

"THE CAFES OF SAN FRANCISCO" is a guide to the cosmopolitan San Francisco Bay Area through its unique cafes. It includes over 300 full-color photographs, 48 in-depth profiles, a directory of more than 340 cafes, plus cafe stories, thoughts, and recipes from cafe lovers including: Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr., Francis Ford Coppola, Chef Joey Altman/BAY CAFE TV, Barbara Graves/THE REPUBLIC OF TEA, Colman Andrews/SAVEUR, John Mariani/ESQUIRE, Chris Rubin/TRAVEL + LEISURE, Comedian Will Durst, Chef Gary Rulli, Beat poet ruth weiss, Spencer Christian/ABC-TV, John Marks/SFCVB, Michel Richard/ALLIANCE FRANCAISE, Michael Kraus & Dan Storper/PUTUMAYO WORLD MUSIC, Michael Smuin/SMUIN BALLET, Joan Osburn/CAFE SOCIETY, Cartoonist Phil Frank/SF CHRONICLE, Jaime Cortez/GALERIA DE LA RAZA, Merla Zellerbach/NOB HILL GAZETTE, Kristi DeCaminada/SAN FRANCISCO BALLET, Deborah Berman/SAN FRANCISCO CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC, David Latimer/CUPS & REZ MAGAZINE, and Consul General of Italy Francesco Sciortino.
